10 years’ jail for 58-year-old man who raped mentally ill neighbour, caused pregnancy; Telangana court imposes Rs 2,000 fine

HYDERABAD: The Additional District Sessions Court in Godavarikhani sentenced a 58-year-old man to 10 years' imprisonment for sexually abusing a woman with mental health issues. After delivering its judgment on Thursday, the court also imposed a fine of ₹2,000 on the convict.

On Feb 20, 2019, a woman filed a complaint at Godavarikhani One Town police station in Peddapalli zone of the Ramagundam commissionerate.

She stated that Akula Gattaiah had raped her eldest daughter, resulting in pregnancy. When her daughter complained of stomach pain on Feb 11, 2019, she was taken to hospital, where doctors informed her, after performing a CT scan, that she was 15 weeks and four days pregnant.

According to officials, Akula Gattaiah took advantage of a neighbour in Shivajinagar, Godavarikhani town, who was mentally distressed while his wife was abroad assisting with the delivery of their daughter.
