Trustee defends expulsion of Vachanananda Swamiji from Harihara Panchamasali Peetha
Haveri: Mahesh Haveri, a trustee of the Harihara Panchamasali Peetha, Wednesday defended the decision to expel Vachanananda Swamiji, citing multiple concerns over his conduct and deviation from established traditions.Addressing reporters, Mahesh stated that swamiji's actions — including frequent foreign trips, posing for photographs with film actors and displaying them at the Peetha, and maintaining close ties with political figures — were considered inappropriate. He explained that although the swamiji had been elevated to the position by the trust, he was later removed due to these issues.Providing background, Mahesh said the Peetha was established in 2008 by community elders. After Siddalinga Swamiji was relieved of his duties, Vachanananda Swamiji was appointed on the recommendation of Balehosur Dingaleshwara Swamiji. He underwent a year of training in rituals and religious practices before assuming the role.He further noted that Lingayat traditions emphasise renunciation and adherence to the Guru system, which, according to him, the swamiji failed to uphold. Instead, he allegedly adopted a lavish lifestyle and neglected his responsibilities toward devotees. He said the controversy has caused distress among devotees. When asked to choose between the Shwasa Peetha and the Panchamasali Peetha, the swamiji allegedly created unrest and demanded financial accounts, leading to his expulsion for violating institutional norms. Mahesh added that legal action would be pursued and consultations with community elders would be held to appoint a successor.
