DHARWAD: Rangayana will organize `Navaratri Rangotsava' in Dharwad this October to encourage college students to take up theatre activities. Rangayana director Lingadevaru Halemane told reporters here on Thursday that the students of seven colleges in the jurisdiction of Karnatak University will be selected and trained in theatre. They will stage plays during Navaratri Rangotsava.
Halemane said Rangayana will extend this programme to other universities in the state.
This year, nine colleges in the jurisdiction of Kuvempu, Mysore, Dharwad and Gulbarga Universities will be selected for training, commencing from Sunday. The training will be completed by October 5 and the trainees will perform in their respective colleges. They will also present shows at the headquarters of their respective universities from October 8 to 16.
Halemane said the Navaratri Rangotsava will be an ongoing programme and next year students from another nine colleges will be selected for training. The department of higher education has provided Rs 25,000 for each play, while Rangayana will pay for food and accommodation of trainees during the training period.
CSI College of Commerce, Government School of Art, Hiremallur Ishwaran PU College, Karnatak College in Dharwad district, B K College, Shri Kalmeshwar PU College, M K Hubli in Belgaum district, A V Baliga College, Kumta, M M College Sirsi and Rangashale in Rangayana of Mysore have been selected for training the students.
Santoshkumar has replaced Huligeppa Kattimani as head of Dharwad unit of Rangayana, as Kattimani has been transferred to Mysore.
