BELAGAVI: The growing popularity of Pikashow, a mobile application offering free streaming of movies, web series, sports and live television, has triggered cybersecurity concerns, with experts warning that installing the app could expose devices to malware and compromise personal data.India-based cybersecurity and threat intelligence firm Shreshta IT Technologies Pvt Ltd, headed by Swapneel Patnekar, has urged users to uninstall the application. The firm has alleged that Pikashow is part of a Pakistan-origin campaign aimed at spreading malicious software and targeting Indian users.
More than meets the app icon
Pikashow is not available on the Google Play Store and must be downloaded through APK files from third-party websites, a process known as sideloading. Experts say this bypasses standard security checks and increases the risk of malware infections."With OTT subscriptions ranging from Rs 149 to Rs 999 per month, the lure of free content is attracting millions. However, such platforms can expose users to severe financial and data risks," Patnekar told TOI.The firm has also reported coordinated activity on X, formerly Twitter, where a network of accounts, alleged to have been created in late 2025, has been promoting download links to expand the app's reach among Indian users.
Apart from cybersecurity risks, accessing pirated content through such platforms is illegal under Indian copyright laws and may have legal consequences.Users have been advised to download applications only from verified platforms such as the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, where apps undergo security checks. Those who have installed Pikashow or similar applications have been urged to delete them, change banking and UPI credentials, and monitor accounts for suspicious activity.Victims of cyber fraud or suspected device compromise can report incidents through the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or on the official portal, cybercrime.gov.in
