Officials directed to regulate lorry movements

KARWAR: Uttara Kannada DC N S Channappa Gowda in an order, directed police and other government agencies to regulate the movement of iron ore and granite lorries from Yellapur town to Baleguli and from Baleguli to Belekeri port near Ankola and to Karwar port, under the Central Motor Vehicle Act 1988.
The order was issued, keeping in the mind the safety of schoolchildren, prevention of road accidents and also for the maintenance of law and order in the area.

With this order, movement of vehicles carrying granite and iron ore is banned in the district from 7 am to 10 am and again from 4.30 pm to 7 pm every day. This order came into effect from Monday.
In the order, the DC put some other conditions on the lorries carrying iron ore and granite to Karwar, Belekeri and Mangalore ports through Uttara Kannada district. Only 400 lorries should unload the cargo at Karwar port and 1,000 lorries in Belekeri port on every day. The lorries going to Mangalore port by RORO (roll on and roll off) should be allowed to move only on Monday and Wednesday every week. The lorries should not be parked along the side of the national highway.
