LPG shortage drives surge in PNG demand in Belagavi

Belagavi: Demand for PNG (pipeline natural gas) connections has increased in Belagavi due to a shortage of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders, reportedly triggered by the war in the Middle East. The PNG project was implemented in Belagavi district in 2017. Under the first phase, the target was to provide 50,000 PNG connections, but only about 34,000 connections were achieved. With the ongoing LPG shortage, residents across Belagavi city and other parts of the district are now showing renewed interest in obtaining PNG connections.

The central govt implemented the PNG scheme with the aim of supplying natural gas through pipelines to households. The PNG network area is located in a few wards of Belagavi City Corporation (BCC). Work is in progress at most places.


Megha City Gas Distribution Private Limited Company has taken over the responsibility of PNG distribution in Belagavi. PNG connections are being provided to domestic commerce and industries.

The officials of the Megha city gas distribution company informed that initially, PNG was distributed with a deposit of 9,500 for each connection. From Jan 2026, it is being distributed at a discounted rate of 8,500. If there are more than 10 homes in the same apartment, a deposit of 7,500 will be charged. After submitting the application, the Megha Gas technical team will visit the home to check if the installation is possible. If approved, they will connect the gas within 10 days. Every connection is equipped with a smart meter, and the bill is based on the usage. There is a bimonthly bill payment system.

The special thing about PNG is that it is a natural gas, so there is less chance of explosion. Since it is lighter than air, it is only likely to catch fire if there is a leak. There will be no explosion, and no smoke will be emitted, causing a disaster.

Adani Gas Limited has installed an NG pipeline from Dabhol in Maharashtra to Bengaluru. This pipeline also passes through Belagavi district. The district has been equipped with a capacity to supply LPG to 50,000 to 60,000 households. Distributors say they aim to increase this capacity in the coming days.

Aadhaar card, voter ID, PAN card or passport, latest electricity bill or water bill, property tax payment receipt are necessary for registration. Residents of rented buildings will need a no-objection letter (NOC) from the owner.
