KU at crossroads: Preserving a historic legacy while charting a modern future
Dharwad: For over seven decades, Karnatak University (KU) has stood as one of the most influential centres of higher education in north Karnataka, shaping generations of scholars, administrators, artists and public intellectuals. Established in 1949, the institution played a historic role in expanding access to higher education across the region.Located in Dharwad, the university emerged as a beacon of learning for students from rural and semi-urban backgrounds. Over the decades, it has produced thousands of graduates who have gone on to serve in govt, academia, industry, judiciary and cultural fields across India and abroad.
Today, as the institution navigates contemporary academic and administrative challenges, the new vice-chancellor prof A M Khan has outlined an ambitious roadmap aimed at restoring institutional efficiency while preserving its historic legacy.Speaking to TOI, prof Khan acknowledged that delays in examinations and result announcements have been a long-standing concern. Final-semester students, in particular, face setbacks in pursuing higher education or securing employment due to result delays of up to four months. To address this, the university plans strict enforcement of the academic calendar from the coming academic year, ensuring examinations are completed before May, and results are declared without delay.A major transformation will come through complete digitisation of the examination ecosystem. A centralised digital system will manage student applications, hall tickets and result announcements, significantly reducing manual processes and student visits to administrative offices. While academic reforms remain central, KU is also prioritising holistic student development. Plans are under way to upgrade sports infrastructure, including badminton and tennis courts and the swimming pool, through a public-private partnership model. It also conducts talent identification trials to nurture promising athletes.Another major focus area is the revitalisation of Research Chairs named after social reformers. Many of these currently face funding and staffing shortages, limiting their outreach. The proposed advisory board and corpus funding initiative aim to strengthen research output and expand activities beyond the campus to benefit society.Meanwhile, a detailed survey of the university's 888-acre campus is under way to address encroachment concerns. As it modernises, the university aims to balance its historic academic legacy with the demands of a rapidly evolving global education landscape.
