HUBBALLI

: The

Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation

(

HDMC

) has identified an

abandoned quarry

near Anchatageri to scientifically

dump construction material

and

debris

(C&D) generated in the twin cities.

The

Public Work Department

has given clearance to corporations to use it.

The move is expected to resolve the long-pending problem of debris dumping on the cities’ roads.

“I will be holding a meeting with the office bearers of consultant civil engineers and CREDAI members to chalk out plans for this. The corporation has identified four agencies for clearing the debris and transporting it to the dumping site. The owners have to pay for the transportation of the debris to the dumping site. This apart, two more places have been identified by the HDMC for scientific disposal of debris in

Dharwad

city,” said HDMC commissioner Suresh Itnal.

The decision will put an end to the debris problem that was haunting the public.

The corporation is currently imposing fine on persons

dumping debris

and construction materials on the public places.

The construction material dumped on the road is a major cause of road accidents. Bikes often skid due to scattered sand on the roads and many accidents have happened in the past, said residents.

“We have recently imposed fine on debris dumpers in Kelageri area in Dharwad and similar action was taken against one such person on Kusugal Road. The drive will be intensified in the coming days,” Itnal added.

“Construction of debris processing unit at Shivalli dumping yard is under progress. Once it is ready, the debris will be processed and recycled products will be produced,” said Santosh Yarangali, executive engineer at environmental engineering wing of HDMC.
