HDMC distributes safety kits to sanitary workers
Hubballi: Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has introduced a thoughtful and practical initiative aimed at improving the health, hygiene, and dignity of sanitary workers, by distributing stainless steel tiffin boxes, and steel water bottles, along with a range of personal safety kit. This is being described as a first-of-its-kind initiative, highlighting HDMC's effort to set a new standard in worker welfare and public sanitation management.
Under this programme, the corporation has spent more than Rs 65 lakh to provide 2,529 hygiene kits to sanitary workers. Each kit has been designed to address both workplace safety and daily well-being.
The kit includes a stainless steel tiffin box, a stainless steel water bottle, hand gloves, masks, shoes, and other essential protective materials. Combining food hygiene with safety equipment, reflects on a broader understanding of the challenges faced by sanitation workers during long working hours. It helps promote hygienic practices and healthier routines.
Protective gears like gloves, masks, and shoes offers an added layer of safety for workers who are regularly exposed to waste, dust, and hazardous environment.
Umesh Dushi, social activist, said that these workers play a critical role in maintaining cleanliness and public health in urban areas, yet their own health and safety is often overlooked. HDMC's initiative recognises their contribution and seeks to provide them practical support that can improve their working conditions and personal dignity. Distribution of these kits is not only a welfare measure but also a message of respect for frontline sanitation staff.
Rudresh Ghali, commissioner of HDMC, said initially the breakfast used to be catered using silver foil and disposable materials. "The HDMC received many complaints pertaining to hygiene of food, and the HDMC decided to use stainless steel tiffin boxes," he added.
