Yadgir: Four children drowned after entering a farm pond near Naganur village in Surpur taluk of Yadgir district on Sunday, plunging the village into grief.
The incident occurred at an agricultural pond located in the field of Bhimanna Gaudageri, situated about 3–4km from the village. The deceased were identified as Basamma Basavaraj Kadamageri, 8, Sharath Rajappa Kadamageri, 6, Hanumesh Rajappa Kadamageri, 8, and Kiran Mallikarjuna Ambargonda,6.
As it was a summer day, the children had gone to the pond to swim. Unaware of the depth of the water, they accidentally drowned. On learning about the incident, villagers rushed to the spot and attempted to rescue the children, but they had died by the time help arrived.
A police case is yet to be registered, and sources said more details would emerge after formal procedures are completed.
The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over the village. Residents have urged for safety measures, including fencing and warning signs, around agricultural ponds to prevent such incidents in the future.
