Extra 43 MLD water to ease Hubballi-Dharwad crisis
Hubballi: The water supply situation in Hubballi city is set to improve significantly over the next seven to eight days, with additional water drawn from the Savadatti jackwell and treated at Amminbhavi reaching Rayapur under the 24x7 water supply project.
Sources said that 21.5 million litres per day (MLD) of water reached Rayapur by Monday night, and the additional supply has also been extended to Navanagar. The volume of extra water flowing into Rayapur is expected to increase to 43 MLD by Thursday night, marking a major step towards strengthening water distribution across the twin cities.
With the enhanced supply, the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) plans to improve the frequency of water supply in all intermittent wards of Hubballi and Dharwad in a phased manner. Residents in these areas are expected to receive water once every three or four days, providing relief to neighbourhoods that have been grappling with irregular supply. The phased rollout is aimed at stabilising the system and ensuring wider coverage across municipal limits.
HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali said that the additional inflow of 43 MLD to Rayapur would help conserve around 20 MLD of water currently sourced from Neersagar. This saved water will be diverted to strengthen supply in rural and peripheral areas such as Sutagatti, Itigatti, Jogellapur and Ramnagar, where residents have been facing shortages.
He added that the water supply schedule in Dharwad has also begun to show signs of improvement, indicating that the benefits of the enhanced water management plan are being felt across multiple parts of the twin cities.
The development is considered a key operational gain under the 24x7 water supply project, which aims to streamline distribution, reduce shortages, and ensure reliable access to drinking water for both urban and rural populations under HDMC jurisdiction. With additional treated water entering the system and conserved Neersagar water being redirected to underserved areas, HDMC's revised supply strategy is expected to improve both the frequency and reach of water supply in the coming days.
