Devotion and reflection mark Good Friday observance across Belagavi
Belagavi: Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, was observed across the city with prayers, fasting and deep solemnity on Friday. Churches in and around Belagavi witnessed a large turnout of devotees who participated in day-long services marked by reverence and reflection. The observance began early in the morning with the traditional ‘Way of the Cross' procession. Devotees symbolically carried the cross, retracing the final journey of Jesus Christ while offering prayers and meditating on His sacrifice.Delivering his sermon, Bishop Derek Fernandes called upon the faithful to renounce hatred and seek forgiveness from God and fellow human beings. Reflecting on the crucifixion, he said, "A question often arises—why was Jesus crucified? A reading of the Holy Bible points to human jealousy as a key reason. It was out of jealousy that people cried out for His crucifixion."He urged believers to introspect and recognise their own shortcomings. "In our daily lives, we too receive indications of our sins. It is our duty to repent and seek God's forgiveness, especially when we harbour jealousy towards others," he said.Highlighting the dangers of hatred, Bishop Fernandes added, "Hatred often engulfs us, leading us to despise our neighbours and even our own brothers and sisters.
In doing so, we distance ourselves from God." He appealed to the faithful to reconcile with one another and seek forgiveness in the spirit of Good Friday.Special prayer services were held at prominent churches, including Fatima Cathedral, St Anthony's Church, Methodist Church, St John the Baptist Church across city. The day was marked by silence, prayer and spiritual reflection, as the Christian community came together to observe Good Friday with devotion and humility.
