Demand for earmuffs rises in Hubballi, amid cold weather

HuBBALLI: Demand for soft and warm earmuffs has risen sharply in Hubballi over the past month, as the city experiences stronger cold weather. With temperatures dipping and chilly winds becoming more noticeable, residents are increasingly turning to earmuffs to stay warm while outdoors.

The surge in demand has also pushed prices upward. Roadside stalls that sold earmuffs for Rs 100 earlier, are now priced between Rs 150 and Rs 200, depending on the material and design. The price is even higher and branded outlets and malls, with reaching as high as Rs 350. Vendors attribute the increase to both higher customer demand, newer varieties with better padding, improved fit, and more fashionable looks.


Veeresh Hiremath, a vendor on Durgadbail, said parents of school-going children are among the most active buyers, as children often travel to school during the coldest hours of the day. Parents are choosing earmuffs as a practical accessory that is easy for children to wear and does not interfere with school uniforms.

The market offers a wide selection of attractive earmuffs, including colourful designs, cartoon-themed styles for kids, and neutral shades for adults. Options for both men and women are widely available, with some products featuring adjustable bands and extra-soft lining for added comfort, he added.

Rafiq, a vendor, said roadside markets saw a visible increase in the number of temporary and exclusive earmuff stalls, with vendors setting up dedicated displays to cater to the seasonal rush. Several sellers introduced fixed pricing, and reported that customers were purchasing without much bargaining.

According to vendors, the steady sales reflect how essential earmuffs have become for many residents, as they provide quick protection from cold wind.

Dr GB Sattur, senior physician and lifestyle expert, said that this year, North Karnataka was experiencing unusually cold mornings, and warned that children going to school by 9 am were more exposed to cold wind.

"The ear has thin skin and is sensitive to cold injury. Cold air could trigger ear pain, headache, and throat irritation. Ear protectors that looked like headphones helped block cold wind effectively," he said.

The doctor added that protecting ears can reduce cold-related cough and sinus symptoms, and was especially useful while walking or riding a 2-wheeler. "Parents should ensure that the earmuffs fit comfortably and stay dry. In winter, protecting ears is important but often ignored," he added.
