Burglars strike at Karnataka Grameena Bank, loot cash and jewellery

HUBBALLI: Burglars gained entry into a bank in Bevur village on Wednesday late night and stole away cash,

gold ornaments

and silver articles.

The incident came to light on Thursday morning, the locals alerted the police when they saw the broken shutters of the bank. Bevur is in Yalburga taluk,

Koppal

district.

Nagreddy Circle Police Inspector of

the Yalburga Circle

told TOI that thieves gained entry into Karnataka Grameena Bank branch in the village. “As of now, it came to light that around Rs 21 lakh from the bank was stolen by the burglars, the amount could be more as the investigation is going on. They entered the bank by cutting open the shutters of the bank using a gas cutter, before that they destroyed the CCTV cameras installed at the entrance of the bank,” he said.

They also broke open the strong room and stole away cash,

gold jewelleries

and silver articles also. “The stolen golden ornament details are yet to be gathered, we have summoned the account holders who kept the jewelleries in the vault, during an inquiry it will be clear,” he said.

Another police officer who is part of the investigation said that the total loot may exceed Rs 1.50 crore, but it is too early to say that.

The police said the burglars have destroyed CCTV cameras installed inside the bank, some locals said the hard disk of the security camera was taken away by the miscreants and some computers also missing.
