Ballari: Police have cracked a suspicious death case in Karekallu village under PD Halli police station limits, arresting the victim's grandson for allegedly murdering her to rob cash and jewellery.According to SP Suman D Pannekar, Veeramma, 60, wife of Basavanagouda, was found dead at her residence on March 21. A UDR was initially registered, but the case was converted into murder after a postmortem report on March 24 confirmed she was killed using a sharp weapon.A special team led by Siruguppa DSP Malatesh Kunabevu, CPI T Subhash Chandra, and PSIs Thimmareddy and Sureshappa investigated the case. The accused, M Virendra, 21, son of late Mallikarjun, allegedly stayed at his grandmother's house on the night of March 20 and slit her throat while she was asleep.Police said he fled with 80g of fake gold jewellery and Rs 23,000, and later set the body on fire to destroy evidence. He escaped to Hagalur village, where the murder weapon, blood-stained clothes, and stolen items were recovered. The accused has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
