Aizawl: At least 70 people lost their lives in 81 major reported across Mizoram between Jan and Sept this year, according to state traffic police officials. As per reports, Aizawl recorded the highest number of road accidents with 37 cases and 26 deaths.
Of the 81 accidents, 62 were fatal, resulting in 70 deaths. Additionally, 24 people sustained serious injuries, while 14 suffered minor wounds during the nine-month period.
March recorded the highest number of accidents at 16, while June saw the fewest with just four incidents, the officials said.
Officials attributed the majority of accidents to the carelessness of the drivers, while drunken driving and mechanical defects caused 10% of the cases.
Given Mizoram’s hilly terrain, with serpentine roads with sharp bends and deep gorges, most vehicular accidents — particularly on interstate highways and inter-village roads — tend to be fatal.
Aizawl district reported the highest number of road accidents and fatalities, with 37 cases and 26 deaths. Kolasib district, which borders Assam, followed with 11 accidents and 8 fatalities. Mamit district, bordering Bangladesh, recorded the lowest figures with one accident and one death.
