Traffic cops tow away unclaimed vehicles to ease congestion ahead of R-Day celebration
GUWAHATI: Hundreds of dust-covered, damaged vehicles are often a usual sight outside the city's police stations or at the side of arterial routes, congesting the roads and contributing to growing vehicular issues. To address these challenges, the have stepped up efforts to tow away .
The announcement was warmly welcomed by the citizens of Guwahati, who had long voiced concerns about traffic disruptions and the shortage of parking spaces caused by abandoned vehicles. Acting swiftly, police officers from various stations responded to reports of unclaimed cars across the city and promptly towed them away.
Jayanta Sarathi Bora, the DCP Traffic, said, "This is a new initiative by the Guwahati Traffic Police aimed at ensuring citizen safety, especially with Republic Day approaching. The primary goals are to alleviate and address parking challenges in the city. On our social media handle, we have also encouraged citizens to report such abandoned cars which have been parked along the side of the road for a long time."
Since the beginning of the operation this week, the officer said that 114 vehicles, both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, were towed to warehouses located in various parts of the city. "A total of 49 warehouses located in various parts of the city, including Jalukbari, Sarusajai, Garchuk, Noonmati, and other areas, have been designated for storing these vehicles," the DCP said.
The officer said many of the vehicles stored in warehouses could not initially be linked to their rightful owners. To address this, the traffic police are collaborating closely with the transport department, using the vehicles' engine and chassis numbers to trace ownership. This joint effort ensures that ownership details can be accurately identified and verified.
