Guwahati: Tinsukia police along with Panitola police confiscated a large amount of cash from a truck and detained the driver on Saturday night.
The unaccounted cash worth Rs 20 lakh was found in a carton kept in the truck. The police said the seized amount will be handed over to the income tax department. The detained driver has been identified as Arun Kumar Yadav.
Talking to media persons, DSP Hiranya Kumar Bora on Sunday said, “The truck belongs to a transport company owned by one Pawan Sharma of Tinsukia.”
During preliminary probe, Bora said the driver confessed that the cash was meant to be delivered to the younger brother of Pawan Sharma in Guwahati.
Meanwhile, Tinsukia police station officer-in-charge, Parag Jyoti Brahma, had contacted the I-T department director about the unaccounted for money. “The sleuths of the I-T department will visit the Tinsukia police station,” Bora added.
Asked about whether the hawala system was involved, the DSP said, “Generally, one cannot send Rs 20 lakh in that manner. A person can send the money through online transactions following the directives of a bank. Since a man had sent an amount of cash to his younger brother; this can be hawala or a normal transaction. The final call will be taken by the tax department and will register a case if necessary.”
