Subansiri hydel project achieves key milestone with Unit-2 trial run
Dibrugarh: The Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project (SLHEP), India’s largest hydropower initiative, reached a significant milestone on Thursday with the successful trial run of Unit-2, a 250 MW component of the 2,000 MW project. Sanjay Kumar Singh, director (projects) at NHPC, was present at the site to oversee this critical phase, which indicates the project’s readiness for commissioning.
The trial run follows the successful synchronization of Unit-2 with the National Grid earlier this month, testing the mechanical and electrical systems under operational conditions. This step ensures the turbine-generator set is prepared for continuous power generation.
During his visit, Singh received updates from Rajendra Prasad, executive director and head of the project, on the construction progress and the project’s readiness for full-scale commissioning. Singh praised the engineering team, stating, “The successful trial run of Unit-2 is a defining milestone that brings us to the doorstep of a new era in India’s renewable energy journey. This achievement is a testament to the untiring efforts and dedication of the entire Subansiri team, who have overcome immense geographical and logistical challenges to bring this project to life.”
Singh also inspected key infrastructure components, including the main dam, diversion tunnel, and spillway structures, and engaged with contractors and stakeholders to review the remaining work.
The SLHEP, which began in 2005, faced an eight-year construction halt starting in 2011 due to environmental concerns and local protests. Work resumed in 2019 following clearance from the National Green Tribunal. The project employs run-of-the-river technology, minimizing environmental impact by utilizing the natural flow of the Subansiri River.
Located on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, the SLHEP is set to generate 2,000 MW of power through eight units of 250 MW each. Once operational, it will be the largest hydropower station in India, significantly boosting NE’s economy and reducing the nation’s carbon footprint.
