Sivasagar District Library gets digital makeover
Dibrugarh: The Sivasagar District Library, a historic institution, has been transformed into a modern digital facility named “Gyankush,” following its inauguration on Friday by Sivasagar District Commissioner Aayush Garg. The revamped library aims to serve as a digital hub, connecting 150 smaller libraries across schools and villages in the district.
During the inauguration ceremony, Commissioner Garg emphasized the library's role in supporting the district's young learners and future generations. “The new library is dedicated to the student community and the new generation. Gyankush will serve not just as a library but as a digital bridge,” he stated.
The upgraded facility features a multi-modal, interconnected system to enhance access to reading materials and digital resources. It includes specialized reading sections, internet connectivity, and learning materials tailored for students preparing for competitive exams.
Garg highlighted the project's alignment with the Assam govt’s literary mission, noting, “The Assam govt has declared 2025 as the Year of Books, and we are happy that we could complete this project in the same year.”
The library’s transformation involved cataloguing 70,000 previously uncatalogued books and adding 1,000 new titles, with another 1,000 titles expected soon. The project, costing approximately Rs 30 lakh, was funded primarily by contributions from Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) and the District Mineral Fund.
Commissioner Garg expressed gratitude to supporting agencies and stressed the importance of the library’s proper utilization. “Creating state-of-the-art infrastructure is not a big thing, its proper utilisation will determine its success,” he said.
In addition to books and digital resources, the library plans to launch a new FM radio station, "Radio Sivasagar," managed by readers and students to foster creativity and participation among the youth.
