Dibrugarh: Sivasagar police arrested a Myanmar-trained hardcore United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) – Ulfa-I militant from Dhyanpathar village in the Palengi area of Sivasagar district under Demow Police Station on Wednesday.
The militant has been identified as self-styled sergeant Major Biren Chetia, alias Rontu Asom, a resident of Bezpathar in Dibrugarh district. Police recovered an Italy-made Beretta pistol, 10 rounds of live ammunition, seven hand grenades, one bottle grenade and Rs 13,500 in cash from him. Police said he was taking shelter inside a house in Dhyanpathar village when the raid was carried out around 12.30am.
The arrest was made during a raid led by Sivasagar senior SSP Papori Chetia, following a tip-off about the militant’s presence in the area.
“During a preliminary investigation, it has come to light that the militant had crossed over from the Nagaland side after coming from Myanmar and entered Sivasagar district. He was supposed to hand over the grenades to an unidentified person with the aim of committing subversive activities,” SSP Chetia said.
