Rickshaw driver becomes students’ hero, gives free rides to exam halls
Guwahati: At a time when daily survival often overshadows simple acts of kindness, an e-rickshaw driver from Tinsukia district has reminded everyone of what humanity looks like.
Pranjal Sonowal, hailing from Talap Gaon village, has been offering free rides to students appearing for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations, easing their journey to exam centres and lifting spirits among the natives.
Sonowal said the HSLC examination is a defining milestone for students in Assam, often bringing anxiety and pressure. In some rural pockets, where public transport can be irregular, arranging timely transportation on exam days is not easy. Noticing these challenges, Sonowal decided to hep out in his own quiet way and strated offering free rides for students on exam days.
Being a fan of Zubeen Garg, Sonowal, who had always admired the singer, said, “I have always listened to his songs and known about his efforts to help the needy. Although I never had the opportunity to meet him, his acts of kindness have left a lasting impression on me. That is also a reason why I decided to start this initiative.”
He used to work under a contractor in a private company, but had to leave his job after meeting with an accident two years ago, in which, he broke his hands. In an effort to earn a livelihood during his recovery, he started ferrying passengers.
Coming from a small family, Sonowal said he was able to continue his education only up to the 10th standard. He explained that his childhood and teenage years were marked by numerous challenges, including financial constraints and family responsibilities. “I studied at Talap Middle School until the seventh standard. After that, I enrolled at Dangari Higher Secondary School, where I continued my studies but left before the matriculation examinations,” Sonowal added.
“Our family was poor, and I experienced hardships from a very young age. Growing up in such circumstances made me understand the struggles of those who lack basic necessities. Perhaps it was those early experiences that shaped my thinking. I often felt that if I ever got the opportunity, I would try to do something selflessly for others, especially for those who are going through the same difficulties that I once faced,” he said.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Valentine's day wishes, messages and quotes !
