Itanagar: The Upper Siang district administration issued an executive order on Friday to maintain public peace by imposing strict prohibitory orders, following reports of intimidation and threats linked to the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).
The move comes in response to what the district administration termed escalating friction between project proponents and opposing groups.
Upper Siang deputy commissioner and district magistrate Talo Jerang, in the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, highlighted a disturbing trend of coercion targeting villagers.
The DM noted that certain groups opposing the SUMP have been allegedly ‘threatening and intimidating’ residents, who signed MoUs consenting to pre-feasibility report activities.
To maintain peace and tranquillity, the DM has directed restricted gatherings, media monitoring, zero tolerance for intimidation and non-interference (no person or group shall direct the administration to stop implementing social and development welfare activities).
