GUWAHATI: One more APS officer was arrested by the special investigation team (SIT) on Thursday in connection with the alleged
Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scam, taking the total count to three so far.
The arrested officer has been identified as Rakesh Das. He was arrested from Beltola in Guwahati. He originally hails from Nalbari district in lower Assam.
Earlier on November 22, the SIT, constituted by the DGP GP Singh following instructions to investigate the involvement of 34 ACS and APS officers recruited in 2013 and 2014, arrested two APS officers - Sahjahan Sarkar and Aishwarya Jiban Baruah.
Sources in police said during investigation, many irregularities, including mismatch of handwriting with the answer script was detected. It also came to light that the father of the accused was close to the then APSC chairperson Rakesh Paul. The source added that a few more officers were interrogated by the SIT and they may get arrested soon.
Rakesh Paul along with 58 officers were arrested by the investigating officer during the probe. All of them were discharged from their services and are currently out on bail. However, the investigating officer did not take any action against the 34 officers, whose names were found in a nine-page tabulation sheet that was recovered during the investigation.
On this, Gauhati high court, while hearing a batch of petitions, questioned the state government, asking why the officers, whose names were there in the tabulation sheet, were not brought under the purview of the investigation.
