Shillong: A three-day international conference on ‘Advances in Chemical Sciences – II (ACS – II)’, organised by the department of chemistry at North Eastern Hill University (Nehu), Shillong, got underway on Wednesday as part of the department’s golden jubilee celebrations.
The event, which will conclude on Friday, is being attended by 150 participants and 30 notable national and international experts.
In his inaugural speech, Prof S Umdor (pro-vice-chancellor, Nehu) highlighted the importance of chemistry as the central science, intricately linked with all applied sciences. However, he concluded with a cautious note, urging the gathered scientists and students to deliberate on developing sustainable strategies in line with the United Nation’s sustainable development goals to counter the “necessary evils” of chemistry, such as plastic pollution.
About 30 distinguished scientists, including international experts like Prof B King (Georgia Institute of Technology, US) and Prof G Niu (Beijing Institute of Technology, China), as well as national experts such as Prof R Gupta (Delhi University) and Prof S Bhattacharya (Jadavpur University, West Bengal) are atending the event.
