Nagaland remits sentences of41 prisoners

In commemoration of the 79th Independence Day, the Nagaland government has granted remission of sentences to 41 prisoners convicted in the state's courts. Nagaland Governor, exercising powers conferred by Article 161 of the Constitution, approved the remission, effective from September 12. However, this remission excludes prisoners convicted under laws falling under the executive powers of the Union.

Dimapur: The Nagaland govt has granted remission of sentences of 41 prisoners who have been convicted by the courts (other than court martial) having criminal jurisdiction in Nagaland and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment in various jails of the state.The state home department on Thursday said in celebration of the 79th Independence Day and consequent to the proposal submitted by director general (prisons), the Nagaland governor, in exercise of the power conferred by Article 161 of the Constitution, has granted remission of sentences of these prisoners.The remission took effect from Sept 12. However, the remission will not apply to those prisoners who were convicted under laws falling under the executive powers of the Centre.Among the 41 prisoners who got remission, 17 are from central jail Dimapur, two from district jail Dimapur, eight from district jail Mon, three from district jail Wokha, four from district jail Tuensang, three from district jail Phek, two from district jail Longleng and two from district jail Kohima.
