Guwahati: The city is once again in the grip of floods after heavy rainfall lashed township over the last two days. The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has taken all the preventive measures in this regard.
The administration has engaged six boats, 23 pumps and sufficient number of rickshaws in the flooded areas. The work is being supervised by magistrates and NGOs.
The administration has declared holiday for all schools and colleges in the city on Tuesday. Educational institutes have also been asked to re-schedule their examination dates.
“We are also alert about shifting people to safer places, in case of emergency situations. Two shelter camps have been kept ready at Sangameria dharmasala and Tarun Ram Phukan indoor hall, Nehru Stadium,” said a district administration official.
The met department has forecast 63mm rainfall on Tuesday. On Monday, it was 101.76mm at Chandmari and 63mm in the Basistha area. Heavy downpour in Meghalaya has also worsened the situation here.
The district administration has also made arrangements for announcement through loudspeakers. Six NDRF teams and as many number of SDRF teams are assisting affected people to move to safer places. Drinking water is being provided to locals in areas which are totally cut off from other places.
Assessment of loss of public property has been initiated by the revenue department. The civil defence authorities are also assisting the administration in its efforts to prevent any loss of life and property.
Deputy commissioner M Angamuthu said the authorities are fully equipped to deal with the situation.
With many areas across the city inundated, the
Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) has decided to suspend power supply in these areas for safety reasons.
Chandra Mudoi, PRO, of ASEB said, “We want people to cooperate with us and not to go near electric posts and transformers. Those who have inverters should place them at higher platforms and be cautious.”
Control rooms are being set up at the offices of the district administration, the CM’s secretariat and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation to monitor and coordinate rescue and relief operations.
For assistance pertaining to city floods, the state government has opened helpline numbers — 0361 2733052, 0361-2237042 and 8811007000. The district administration has also alerted people residing in landslide-prone areas of the hills.
