Agartala: The body of 23-year-old Saptarshi Das, an intern doctor at a private hospital in Lucknow, arrived at his home in Ramnagar, Agartala, on Monday after a three-day road journey covering 2,500 km from Delhi. Saptarshi lost his life in a
road accident on Dec 3.
The transportation of Saptarshi’s body faced delays due to disruptions in IndiGo flight operations. After waiting for three days in Delhi without any confirmed flights, the family hired a mortuary van for the journey back home early Saturday morning. The difficult journey was accompanied by two of Saptarshi’s cousins and his maternal uncle.
The delays were part of a broader operational crisis at Indigo Airlines, which had caused repeated flight cancellations. Saptarshi and his friends — Arnav Chakraborty, Ayush Sharma, and Shrestha Pancholi — lost their lives in a high-speed collision with a stationary truck on the Delhi-Lucknow national highway at night.
CM Manik Saha, Agartala mayor Dipak Mujumdar, and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman visited Saptarshi’s residence to pay their respects and attended his last rites at the Battala crematorium. The ceremony marked a week since his untimely death.
Expressing his condolences, Saha said, “I have no words to alleviate the family’s loss but assured them of the govt’s full support. I prayed for the strength of his parents to endure this grief. I urge everyone to remain cautious while driving or riding vehicles. Only self-awareness can prevent such tragedies.”
Following an autopsy, Saptarshi’s body was handed over to his family, but their attempts to fly home were thwarted by multiple cancellations at Delhi airport. Saptarshi was nearing the completion of his MBBS internship at Venkateshwar Medical University in Uttar Pradesh, with just three months remaining. He had planned to return home for the holidays at the end of the year, a reunion that will now never come to pass.
