Silchar: Six people were detained by villagers after they were allegedly caught transporting stolen goats in an ambulance in Hailakandi district during the early hours of Thursday.
The incident took place at Dhumkar near Matijuri in Hailakandi. According to sources, residents grew suspicious of an ambulance moving through the area in the wee hours and stopped the vehicle for inspection.
During the search, villagers allegedly found several goats inside the ambulance, raising suspicion that the animals were stolen. The discovery sparked chaos in the locality, following which residents detained the six people in the vehicle.
The villagers kept the suspects under watch and informed the police. A team from Hailakandi Sadar police station, assisted by personnel from the Bandukmara police outpost, rushed to the spot and arrested the accused.
Police also seized the ambulance and launched an investigation into the matter. Officials said all aspects of the case, including the ownership of the goats and the circumstances under which they were being transported, were being examined.
