GMC rolls out modern sanitation fleet to boost city cleanliness
Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) formally inducted a new fleet of modern sanitation machinery to strengthen mechanised cleaning and solid waste management across the city.
The ceremonial flagging off the event was held in the Khanapara area of the city. Jayanta Mallabaruah, minister for urban and housing affairs, flagged off a fleet of sanitation vehicles that will be deployed to improve civic services and cleanliness across the city.
The fleet includes four mechanical sweeping machines to clean the main arterial routes, 50 auto tippers for regular waste collection in every ward, seven mini suction machines to address waterlogging issues and clean silt from drains, and 14 dumping trucks for efficient transportation and disposal of waste.
“These vehicles are expected to strengthen the sanitation infrastructure and ensure better solid waste management in both residential and commercial areas. The deployment will... provide a long-term solution to recurring problems such as clogged drains and waterlogging during monsoon,” Mallabaruah said.
The minister, while emphasising the use of monitoring technology on these new vehicles, said. “In the past, GMC had started monitoring its vehicles using the required technology. It is hoped that, with the help of geo-tracking systems, the authorities will be able to effectively monitor these newly inducted vehicles as well, so that the machines do not get bad or exploited.”
The flag-off ceremony was done in the presence of GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania, deputy mayor Smita Roy, GMC commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phukoon, additional commissioner Dhruba Jyoti Hazarika and other senior officials of the corporation.
Sarania said, “The induction of modern machinery would help GMC shift further towards mechanised sanitation practices, reducing dependence on manual labour and improving efficiency in daily operations, in alignment with the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission.”
