India vs New Zealand highlights, 4th T20I: New Zealand beat India by 50 runs

India vs New Zealand highlights, 4th T20I: Shivam Dube produced a blazing half-century of rare quality, but it wasn’t enough to save India from a 50-run defeat against New Zealand in the fourth T20I on Wednesday. Dube’s explosive 65 off 23 balls (3x4, 7x6) stood out in India’s daunting chase of 216, yet the hosts were eventually bowled out for 165 as the Kiwis pulled the series back to 3-1.

With Ishan Kishan sidelined due to injury, Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav were tasked with setting up the chase. Instead, Abhishek departed first ball, slicing Matt Henry to Devon Conway at deep point. Suryakumar followed soon after, his gentle push brilliantly snaffled by Jacob Duffy in his follow-through, leaving India reeling at 9 for two.

Rinku Singh (39) and Sanju Samson (24) attempted to stabilise the innings but struggled to accelerate, both in the Powerplay and beyond. Rinku was trapped lbw by Zak Foulkes, while Samson — who had earlier produced a sumptuous flicked six off Duffy — was beaten by Mitchell Santner’s straight one and bowled.

Hardik Pandya also failed to make an impact, and India slid to 82 for five in the 11th over, leaving Dube to shoulder the responsibility alongside Harshit Rana (9).

Unfazed by the soaring asking rate, which hovered around 14, Dube batted with freedom and intent. Given a reprieve on 46 via DRS, he reignited Indian hopes by plundering 29 runs off Ish Sodhi’s third over, smashing a sequence of 4, 6, 4, 6, 6. He raced to his fifty in just 15 balls with a six over square leg off Duffy.

The sixth-wicket stand added 63 runs, though Rana’s contribution amounted to just four. Dube’s remarkable innings ended in cruel fashion when Rana’s straight drive deflected off Matt Henry’s hand and crashed into the non-striker’s stumps, catching Dube well short. That moment effectively ended India’s chase.

Earlier, New Zealand’s innings was anchored by Tim Seifert’s scintillating half-century. Seifert struck 62 off 36 balls (7x4, 3x6) and was the standout performer, though he lacked sustained support after India tightened the screws through the middle overs.

Fresh from the Big Bash League, Seifert began aggressively, carving Arshdeep Singh for three consecutive fours — two off edges — before launching Harshit Rana for a towering six over long-on. He continued his assault in Rana’s next over with a six and four, and then sent Jasprit Bumrah to the sight-screen for another maximum.

New Zealand raced to 50 in the fourth over and reached 71 without loss in the Powerplay. Seifert’s tempo allowed Devon Conway (44) to settle before accelerating. After crawling to 9 off 9 balls, Conway found his range, taking Ravi Bishnoi for two fours and a six, and then added 35 runs from his next 13 deliveries.

However, Conway perished trying to clear deep cover off Kuldeep Yadav, ending a 100-run opening partnership. Seifert soon completed a 25-ball fifty, but India clawed back with four wickets for 37 runs, reducing New Zealand to 137 for four in 13.4 overs.

While there was no single magical spell, India benefited from the visitors’ eagerness to sustain the early run rate of 12 an over. That over-ambition triggered a mini-collapse. Daryl Mitchell (39 not out off 18 balls) provided late impetus with some clean striking, lifting New Zealand beyond the 200 mark.

India vs New Zealand Live Score: PITCH REPORT
It’s a pleasant evening here in Visakhapatnam for the fourth T20I of the series. The pitch is right in the centre of the ground - 65 metres on either side, so no bias there. Straight down the ground is about 74 metres, so not the biggest venue. It does look like an absolute belter. It’s got a really nice straw-coloured grass covering on it.

Let’s come down and have a closer look, because that straw-coloured grass, as we say back home, it’s harder than a cat’s head. And that’s exactly what this is. It is rock hard and should slide onto the bat beautifully. The outfield looks magnificent. I thought Vadodara was the best outfield I’d seen in the country, but I think this might even top that. It’s like walking on a carpet - just beautiful. We’ve seen high-scoring games here in the last couple of years, especially in the IPL.

The average first-innings score is around 209, and there was even a 272 scored here in a T20 game. So whether we see something like that tonight, I’m not sure, but if you bat first, you’re going to need plenty. It’s a high-scoring surface, plenty of runs, plenty of sixes, and a little bit of dew expected in the second half. So if you win the toss, you’d want to chase.

India vs New Zealand Live Score: 'The runs and scores are definitely evolving'
It looks like a good wicket again. The dew has already kind of set in, so it might be a bit harder later on. The runs and scores are definitely evolving. We know the quality of this Indian side, and we’ve seen that in the first three games. We need to be better with the ball.

First up, though, it looks like a good wicket, so we’ll try to set a strong total tonight. Most of the guys are already here playing this series. Lockie is still out, and Finn (Allen) is on his way, so we’ve got a couple of additions still to come. But the roles are pretty clear, and we’ll probably get similar wickets in the World Cup.

One change - Foulkes comes in for Jamieson. Lockie and Finn are still a little way off, but it’s good to have them coming back.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and elected to field against New Zealand in the fourth T20I at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Having already sealed the five-match series 3-0 with victories in the opening three games, India headed into the contest with momentum firmly on their side.

"We’re going to bowl first. It looks like a good wicket, and we’ll get a chance to practise here later. There was a lot of dew last night and today it’s a little humid as well, so we feel that in the second innings the ball will come onto the bat nicely. I think the important thing is to repeat the good habits we’ve built over the past year, not just in this series. We want to keep doing the good things we’ve been doing, learn from the last game, and go out there, enjoy ourselves, play the format the way it’s meant to be played, and entertain the people who’ve come here. It’s a beautiful ground and a lovely crowd here. Hopefully the boys are charged up and we have a good, entertaining night," Suryakumar said at the toss.

"Arshdeep comes in for Ishan Kishan, who picked up a niggle in the last game. Axar Patel still needs a bit more time, so hopefully we’ll see him in the next game. The batters will need to take a bit more responsibility, but at the same time not shy away from playing with fearless intent. We’ve got five good bowling options today, so we’ll see how it goes," he added.

Kishan has been in fine touch during the series and played an important role in helping India secure an unassailable lead. He is currently the fourth-highest run-scorer in the contest, having amassed 112 runs from three T20Is at a striking rate of 224.00 and an average of 37.33.

IND vs NZ Live Score, 4th T20I: Who is ahead in this race - Sanju Samson or Ishan Kishan?
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan is in exceptional form during the New Zealand T20I series, while Sanju Samson’s recent performances have left much to be desired. Kishan, who starred in the 2025/26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) campaign with Jharkhand—leading them to their first-ever SMAT title—returned to the Indian team after last playing a T20I against Australia in late 2023.

India currently field two wicketkeepers/batters in the playing XI: Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson. However, Samson’s struggles in the ongoing series have raised questions about whether he has slipped behind Kishan in the race for a permanent spot.

"Sanju Samson got out off the first ball. He got out in the last two matches as well, and Ishan Kishan is playing well, however much he is playing," Chopra said.

"Ishan Kishan played a short but destructive knock this time too. He batted incredibly well, and by the time his wicket fell at 53, he had made his runs, and he is not stopping anytime soon. So who is ahead in this race?" he added.

Samson has failed to reach double figures in the series so far, scoring only 16 runs in three matches at an average of 5, while Kishan has been destructive, amassing 112 runs in the same number of games. In the third T20I on Sunday, Samson was dismissed for a golden duck, while Kishan delivered a fiery 28-run cameo off 13 balls.

Chopra believes Samson’s position in the team could be under threat, particularly given Kishan’s impressive form. He suggested that selectors might soon face a tough decision between the two, especially with Tilak Varma returning from injury.

"You will have to ask a question. We dropped Gill because there was a new philosophy or ideology, and went towards Sanju Samson, but it seems like you won't be able to stay with him for long. If you see their numbers lately, they seem identical," Chopra observed.

"Ishan Kishan wasn't part of your original planning. However, if Tilak becomes available for the next game, it will be a call that India must take, whether they should go with Sanju or Ishan Kishan," he added.

IND vs NZ Live Score, 4th T20I: 'It's been a little bit of chaos' - Jacob Oram
The relentless aggression of Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav has made it tough for New Zealand bowlers to "remain calm" in the ongoing T20I series, but bowling coach Jacob Oram urged them to embrace the challenge and learn from it.

The Indian top-order trio has consistently put the Kiwi attack under pressure, scoring at a strike-rate close to 250 across the first three matches.

"It's been a little bit of chaos out in the middle with the ball flying everywhere, to remain calm and controlled and remember those plans and then obviously execute them. But I say again, it's all part of the learning," Oram said during the pre-match press conference here.

Oram drew a parallel between India’s clean-hitting and the legendary Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya, who dominated with a similar approach from the 90s to the mid-2000s.

"Jayasurya from Sri Lanka who kind of did the same thing at that time and I think that's just a natural progression of the game. I think what you see is the tendency for bowlers to have to catch up and that's our challenge now as the bowling coach and there are plenty of discussions happening."

Neutralising three batters in such prime form has been a major task for the Kiwi bowlers.

"Abhishek at the moment … outstanding form, hitting it clean, let's just hope game two is reproduced in game four and we get him out early. We're not glazing over these results.

"But the thing is he's (Abhishek) not the only one, Suryakumar has played well, Ishan Kishan in the second game. We know there are challenges up and down the (Indian batting) line-up," said Oram.

Oram’s assessment was echoed by pacer Lockie Ferguson, who bowled extensively at the nets ahead of Wednesday’s fourth T20I.

"Yeah, he's batting well. He's full of confidence and he's playing some outstanding shots. We've seen players do this in the past. It's important to review, find areas where he's a little bit weaker and try to bring an aggressive brand of cricket into what we're playing,” Ferguson said.

"But there's no doubt that he's in fine form. So, sometimes it's best to try to get him off-strike, get him at the other end and bowl to the other batter," the pacer added with a chuckle.

Ferguson’s inclusion has brought experience to the New Zealand attack.

Oram also reflected on maintaining the morale of a young bowling unit under constant pressure.

"I think there are a couple of factors. The first and foremost is a realisation that it's hard in these conditions. This isn't New Zealand with green grass and the ball seeming and bouncing. We mentioned before about the likes of Abhishek, SKY, Ishan ... it’s a good side and we appreciate that.

"I keep using the word challenge, so the challenge for us is to peel back those layers, to appreciate how hard it is here, but still find little things along the way that we can improve," he added.
17:38 (IST) Jan 28
India vs New Zealand Live Score: 'Ishan Kishan not putting extra pressure on himself about selection'
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has praised Ishan Kishan’s ability to make full use of a bowler’s pace, identifying it as a key factor behind his impressive run in the ongoing New Zealand T20I series.

Kishan has been in fine touch and played an important role in India securing an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. He is currently the fourth-highest run-scorer in the contest, having amassed 112 runs from three T20Is at a striking rate of 224.00 and an average of 37.33.

After managing just eight runs in the series opener, the left-hander bounced back with a scintillating 76 off 32 balls in the second T20I, helping India chase down a stiff 209-run target in only 15.2 overs. He followed it up with a brisk 28 off 13 deliveries in the third T20I, providing India with a flying start in a chase of 154, which was completed in just 10 overs.

Ahead of the fourth T20I between India and New Zealand, Patel explained on ‘Game Plan’ that Kishan’s success stems from his smart handling of good-length deliveries, either guiding the ball through the offside or dispatching short balls with authority. He added that Kishan’s strong domestic performances have boosted his confidence, allowing him to enjoy his batting without worrying about selection.

"As a bowling coach, you tell your bowlers to hit the right length, finishing around the top of off stump. That is where most balls are ending of the New Zealand bowlers. But Ishan Kishan has the skill to use the pace and guide it through the offside. If it is slightly short, he pulls it to mid-wicket or fine leg. That is why he is so successful. He has a lot of runs behind him from domestic cricket, and he is batting brilliantly. He seems to be enjoying his game and not putting extra pressure on himself about selection. That is the reason for his success," Parthiv Patel said.

Kishan had enjoyed a memorable Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025/26 campaign with Jharkhand, guiding them to their maiden SMAT title. Prior to his recall to the national side, he had last featured in a T20I in 2023 against Australia.

IND vs NZ Live Score, 4th T20I: Suryakumar Yadav all set to become the third Indian to ...
Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav is just 41 runs away from becoming the third Indian to score 3,000 T20I runs as Team India prepares for the fourth T20I against New Zealand on Wednesday.

With the five-match series already in India’s pocket after winning the first three games, the team is expected to continue its aggressive 'SKYball' approach, sending a clear message about their T20 World Cup readiness next month.

In 102 T20Is and 96 innings so far, Suryakumar has amassed 2,959 runs at an average of 36.98 and a strike rate of 165.03, including four centuries and 23 fifties, with a highest score of 117. He currently trails only Indian legends Rohit Sharma (4,231 runs in 159 matches at an average of 32.05, strike rate of 140.89, with five centuries and 32 fifties) and Virat Kohli (4,188 runs in 125 matches at an average of 48.69, strike rate of 137.04, with one century and 38 fifties) in India’s all-time T20I charts.

Globally, only 11 batters have crossed the 3,000-run mark in T20Is, with Rohit at the top of this elite list. If Suryakumar manages the remaining 41 runs in the final two matches of the series, he would become the second-fastest Indian to reach the milestone, after Virat Kohli, who achieved it in 81 innings.

After a slump that began towards the end of 2024 and continued through 2025, Suryakumar has been back in top form in this series. His fluent strokeplay, exquisite wrist work, and signature flicks, drives, and sweeps have once again captivated fans. With 171 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 201.17, he is currently the highest run-scorer of the series, reaffirming his status as one of India’s most destructive T20 batters.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 'His six-hitting ability is second to none'
New Zealand batter Mark Chapman believes Abhishek Sharma’s six-hitting prowess is not just mindless aggression, but the result of sharp game awareness and planning. The Kiwi batter said his team will look to pick up cues from the dynamic Indian opener ahead of next month’s T20 World Cup.

The world No. 1 T20I batter continued his blazing form with a 20-ball 68 not out, including a 14-ball fifty featuring five sixes, as India chased 154 in just 10 overs to seal an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Throughout the series, New Zealand has found itself at the receiving end of Abhishek’s relentless assault. In the opener, he had smashed eight sixes in a 35-ball 84 as India posted 238/7 before cruising to victory.

"To be honest, their batting has been dynamic and explosive," Chapman said in a post-match media interaction.

"I haven't seen much of him play in person. But his six-hitting ability is second to none. Just the way he goes about it, he seems like he's really putting some thought into his batting.

"Obviously he's playing some really good cricket at the moment. That's just the nature of T20 cricket. When someone's playing really well, they can be hard to stop at times.

"There's a lot for us to look at and review. In all three facets, we can definitely improve," Chapman added.

Despite losing the series, Chapman felt facing India provided ideal preparation ahead of the global showpiece, with New Zealand eager to fine-tune their game before opening their World Cup campaign against Afghanistan in Chennai on February 8.

"We're going to have to look at getting some bigger scores. The surfaces have been really good, but we're well aware that not every surface in India is an absolute belter. There will be times when the ball turns, so we've got to be ready for everything.

"From our point of view, there's no better preparation for a World Cup than facing one of the best T20 teams in the world. It's great to see the way they're going about their business, so hopefully we can learn one or two things off them."

Chapman also reflected on New Zealand’s struggles in the power play compared to India’s explosive starts.

"It's disappointing today not to get as many, but having said that, we've got batters throughout the order who are capable of clearing the ropes.

"Yeah, obviously it's not ideal losing a couple of early wickets in the power play. But you also have to give credit where it's due. I thought the Indians bowled really well. They tied us down and we just weren't able to get the ball away, unfortunately.

"Obviously it's disappointing to be out of the series already. India have played some really, really good cricket. There are some things that we can tidy up on our end and, from our point of view, it’s about reviewing.

"Obviously we've got one eye on the World Cup as well. We've got two more games here. For us, it's about fine-tuning things and getting better each game to put us in good stead for that first game against Afghanistan," he concluded.

India vs New Zealand highlights, 4th T20I: Shivam Dube blazed away with a fifty of the highest quality, but his lone assault was not enough to save India from a 50-run defeat against New Zealand in the fourth T20I on Wednesday. Chasing a daunting 216, India were bowled out for 165, despite Dube’s superb 65 off 23 balls (3 fours, 7 sixes), as the visitors pulled the series back to 3-1.

With Ishan Kishan sidelined due to injury, the onus was on Abhishek Sharma and captain Suryakumar Yadav to set the tone. Instead, India suffered an immediate setback as Abhishek fell to the very first ball, skying Matt Henry to Devon Conway at deep point.

Suryakumar followed soon after, his tentative push turning into a stunning caught-and-bowled effort by Jacob Duffy, leaving India reeling at 9 for 2. Rinku Singh (39) and Sanju Samson (24) attempted to steady the innings, but momentum remained elusive both inside and outside the Powerplay.

Rinku was trapped lbw by Zak Foulkes, while Samson, after playing a delightful flicked six off Duffy, was deceived by Mitchell Santner and bowled. Hardik Pandya failed to make an impact as well, as India slid to 82 for five in the 11th over, leaving Dube and Harshit Rana (9) with a steep task.

Unfazed by the mounting asking rate, Dube batted with remarkable freedom and authority. Given a lifeline via DRS on 46, he reignited Indian hopes by smashing 29 runs off Ish Sodhi’s third over, striking a brutal sequence of 4, 6, 4, 6, 6.

The left-hander brought up a stunning 15-ball fifty with a six over square leg off Duffy. Dube and Rana added 63 runs for the sixth wicket, though Rana’s personal contribution amounted to just four runs.

India’s hopes finally evaporated when Dube was run out in cruel fashion. Rana’s fierce straight drive deflected off Henry’s hand and crashed into the stumps at the non-striker’s end, with Dube well short of his ground — a moment that effectively sealed India’s fate.

Earlier, New Zealand’s innings was built around a scintillating half-century from Tim Seifert. The wicketkeeper-batter struck 62 off 36 balls (7 fours, 3 sixes), setting the platform even though he lacked substantial support deep into the innings.

Fresh from the Big Bash League, Seifert began aggressively, striking Arshdeep Singh for three consecutive fours — two via edges — before launching Harshit Rana over long-on for six. He continued his onslaught in subsequent overs, taking Rana and Jasprit Bumrah to task as New Zealand raced to 50 in just four overs and reached 71 without loss at the end of the Powerplay.

Seifert’s aggression allowed Devon Conway (44) the time to settle before accelerating. After starting slowly with 9 off 9 balls, Conway found his rhythm against Ravi Bishnoi, collecting two fours and a six in an over. He added 35 runs off his next 13 deliveries before holing out to Rinku Singh at deep cover off Kuldeep Yadav, breaking the 100-run opening stand.

Seifert completed his fifty off 25 balls, but India clawed their way back by taking four wickets for 37 runs, reducing New Zealand to 137 for four in the 13.4th over. While there were no standout spells, Indian bowlers benefitted from the visitors’ eagerness to maintain the high scoring rate set by the openers.

Daryl Mitchell provided the late impetus with an unbeaten 39 off 18 balls, striking cleanly at the death to propel New Zealand past the 200-run mark — a total that ultimately proved far beyond India’s reach.
