GUWAHATI: A delegation of the

Election Commission India

(ECI) will be visiting Assam on January 11 for two days to assess the ground situation ahead of the assembly elections.


The team will be led by director general of ECl, Dharmendra Sharma. “He (Sharma) will hold review meetings on preparedness for forthcoming general elections to Assam legislative assembly with the district election officers (DEO), superintendents of police (SP) of twenty number of election districts at Dibrugarh on 11/01/2021,” a statement by the deputy secretary to the state election department read on Thursday.

It added that another review meeting will be conducted in Guwahati on January 12 with DEOs, SPs of 30 election districts along with nodal officers of police, excise, transport and other senior officials.

“On the second day of the visit, Dharmendra Sharma will also meet chief secretary, Assam, and other senior officers of the state government for discussions on preparedness for the upcoming elections,” Nitin Khade, chief electoral officer of Assam, informed.

The five-year term of the current Assam assembly ends on May 31 and election officials expect that the polls will be held in April or May. Sources in the election department say that based on the feedback of the team, a full commission is likely to visit the state soon. “The final electoral rolls will be published on January 15, but it will be updated till the last day of nominations,” the source added.

The draft electoral rolls for the 126 constituencies in the state were published in November last year with 2.24 crore voters, including 1.17 lakh people who will exercise their franchise for the first time.
