East Khasi Hills district implements immediate ban on bull fights to uphold animal welfare

Shillong: The East Khasi Hills district administration has announced an immediate ban on bull fights. The prohibition, detailed in a notification issued on Sept 4, comes in response to reports of widespread bull and animal fights during local festivals and events.

DM Rosetta Mary Kurbah highlighted that such activities contravene Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and violate a 2014 Supreme Court ruling against bull fighting. Exercising her authority under Section 163 BNSS, Kurbah has enforced a district-wide ban, warning that any breaches will face strict legal consequences.

The order, passed ex-parte due to the urgency of the situation, is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice. This decisive action underscores the district’s commitment to animal welfare and adherence to national legal standards.
