Dibrugarh to get new Vande Bharat Express, major rail infra upgrade: PMO

Dibrugarh: The Prime Minister’s office (PMO) has confirmed that a new Vande Bharat Express train will be introduced from Dibrugarh in the coming days, along with a comprehensive railway infrastructure upgrade for the city.

The announcement came in response to a letter written by Dibrugarh youth leader Parag Dutta to PM Modi on Dec 21, 2025, advocating for railway infrastructure development in Dibrugarh. The PMO’s reply, dated Feb 9, 2026, outlined an ambitious development roadmap for the city’s railway network.





According to the PMO communication, four major development projects are currently in process for Dibrugarh. These include the establishment of a new Vande Bharat Express terminus with national-level facilities at Dibrugarh Railway Station, renovation of the existing Dibrugarh Railway Workshop into a national-level workshop equipped with modern machinery and equipment, and development of Dibrugarh Town Railway Station building with national-level passenger amenities.

Additionally, new residential building complexes for railway employees will be constructed at Gabharupathar, Naliapool Kadamoni, and Chiring Gaon colony in Dibrugarh, addressing the long-standing accommodation needs of railway staff.

“This is a historic moment for Dibrugarh. The new Vande Bharat Express and the planned infrastructure developments will transform our city’s connectivity and boost economic growth,” Dutta said, welcoming govt’s response.

Railway sources have confirmed that a Vande Bharat Express connecting Dibrugarh and Guwahati is currently at the planning stage under the Northeast Frontier Railway. This semi-high-speed train service is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two important cities of Assam, enhancing business and tourism prospects for the region.

The introduction of Vande Bharat services will represent a quantum leap in railway connectivity for upper Assam, which has historically lagged behind other regions in terms of modern train services.

The upgrade of Dibrugarh Railway Workshop to national standards will create employment opportunities and establish the city as a major railway maintenance hub in the northeast. The modernisation of Dibrugarh Town Railway station will enhance the travel experience for thousands of daily commuters.

These developments align with the Centre’s focus on improving railway infrastructure in the northeast and integrating the region more effectively with the rest of the country through better connectivity and modern facilities.
