The results of Cotton College Students Union elections were declared on Friday amidst much tension and anticipation.

GUWAHATI: The results of Cotton College Students Union elections were declared on Friday amidst much tension and anticipation.
While 15 students from different courses and streams were elected for various posts in the union body, the most significant outcome was the election of Bedabrata Gogoi to the post of general secretary. Gogoi was backed by RTI activist and Team Anna core committee member Akhil Gogoi.

He is an MA first semester student from the history department.
Pranab Jyoti Bhuyan, another MA first semester student from the anthropology department was elected the new vice president of the union, while Jnanendra Kalita, a BA second year student from the economics department clinched the post of debate and symposium secretary. Priyakshi Das, a BA second year student from the English department won the post of social service secretary uncontested.
Sania Wahid, another BA second year English student was elected the new music secretary while Elwin Kro Nihang, Sania's batchmate from the economics department, was elected the new cultural affairs secretary.
On the other hand, Jogesh Dihingia, a BA third year anthropology student was elected the new tennis secretary and Akash Das, a BA third year economics student was the new minor games secretary.
The youngest candidate in the polls, Deep Sarkar, was voted as the new major games secretary. He is a higher secondary second year student.
The list of uncontested winners included Priyanka Gogoi as assistant general secretary, Rinku Moni Deka as magazine (Cottonian) secretary, Zakir Ali as boys' common room secretary, Himangshi Baruah as girls' common room secretary, Sachidhar Pegu as football secretary and Dibakar Das as the new cricket secretary.
Amidst jubilation in the winners' camp, there were allegations from the a section of students that there were some irregularities in the counting of the votes for the post of the general secretary. College authorities, however, refused to comment on the issue.
