Aizawl: Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced that the by-election for the Dampa assembly constituency in Mizoram’s north-western Mamit district will be held on Nov 11.
The poll will coincide with the second phase of the
Bihar assembly elections and bypolls in seven other states.
According to the ECI’s announcement, the notification for the Dampa bypoll will be issued on Oct 13. The last date for filing nominations is Oct 21, with scrutiny scheduled for the following day. The final date for withdrawal of candidature is also Oct 24, and counting of votes will take place on Nov 14.
The bypoll was necessitated by the death of sitting legislator Lalrintluanga Sailo of the opposition
Mizo National Front (MNF) on July 21.
The contest is expected to be four-cornered, involving
BJP,
Congress, MNF, and the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM).
With a significant minority population in the constituency, national parties like the BJP and Congress are expected to play key roles. However, political analysts predict the main contest will likely be between MNF and ZPM.
