GUWAHATI: Bhupen Hazarika? I feel short of words to describe the legendary figure who had occupied a great place in the hearts of people like us. Assamese society will remember his contribution in uniting the people of the state through his unforgettable songs. His works are like treasures for Assam.
For me, Bhupen Hazarika was an institution. His evergreen songs have the quality of casting a spell.

I came in close contact with him during the making of my film, Chameli Memsaab, in 1975. It was an unforgettable association. His music was an instant hit and the film went on to bag the best music director award at the National Film Awards in 1977.
We had hoped that he would recover and be among the people of Assam soon. As an icon, we will keep turning to him for inspiration.
Despite his busy schedule as a music composer, singer and lyricist, he was keen to make films. He made a number of films in Assamese and other languages, starting with Era Bator Sur (1956).
(Abdul Mazid is a veteran actor and director in Assamese cinema. His blockbuster hit Chameli Memsaab, won the Best Regional Film and Best Music Direction award at the National Awards. The other films he has made are Morom Trishna (1968), Chameli Memsaab (1975), Banahansha (1977), Bonjui (1978), Ponkon (1981) and Uttor Kaal (1990).
