AU declares Bohag Bihu as holiday after AJP criticism
Silchar: Complying with the demands of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Assam University on Thursday included Bohag Bihu in its holiday calendar.
Previously, Bohag Bihu, which is scheduled to be celebrated on April 15, was mentioned as a restricted holiday in the holiday list of the central university. However, in a fresh notification, registrar Pradosh Kiran Nath said the university and its affiliated colleges will remain closed on April 15 in observance of Bengali New Year and Bohag Bihu.
Earlier, led by Lurinjyoti Gogoi, AJP had expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of Bohag Bihu from the university's holiday schedule.
Gogoi and general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan said Bihu was related to the people's sentiment. Despite reaping the benefits of the Assam Accord for the university, the institution's failure to recognise festivals such as Bohag Bihu remains a source of great concern, they added.
