Assam roll shows 5% voters aged 18-19, 0.8% above 85: Goel
Guwahati: Nearly 5% of the total electors listed in the final roll, which was published on Tuesday after the Special Revision (SR) concluded, are voters of 18-19 years of age group while 0.8% are of 85 years and above age.
Assam chief electoral officer (CEO) Anurag Goel said in a press conference here on Wednesday that a total of 5,75,258 are voters of 18-19 years of age group, which is 4.6% of the total electors, and 1,04,238 of 85 years and above, which is 0.8% of the total electors.
Over 2.49 crore voters’ names have been included in the final electoral roll after deletion of over 2.43 lakh names due to death, shifting and multiple entries from the draft roll, which was published on Dec 27 last year.
The CEO said among the 126 constituencies, the Dalgaon assembly constituency has the highest number of voters, while Amri (ST) constituency has the lowest. Dalgaon has over 3.15 lakh voters, while Amri (ST) has over 1 lakh voters.
He said over 5.86 lakh applications for inclusion in the electoral roll through Form 6 were accepted during the SR, while over 10.63 lakh applications either for deletion due to death, permanent shifting or multiple entries through Form 7 were accepted.
“We have been able to conduct the Special Revision in a transparent and cleaner way. Conclusion of the SR is one step, we have moved forward. Now, the usual continuous updation process of the electoral roll will continue. If anyone does not find their name in the find roll, or if anyone has been left from the roll, can apply for inclusion in the roll as usual,” he added.
He added that SR is an intermediate mechanism between the Special Summary Revision (SSR), which is being conducted before every election, and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
“In SIR, every individual has to be present during the door-to-door visit with their proof of citizenship. In SR, anyone of a family can provide information of the family members to the BLOs during the door-to-door visit,” he added.
SIR was conducted in Assam in 2004. The door-to-door verification by the BLOs was conducted from Nov 22 to Dec 20 last year while the filing of claims and objections was conducted from Dec 27 last year to Jan 22 after the draft roll was published on Dec 27.
Of the thousands of people, who were evicted from various forest land which they had been illegally occupying, the CEO said many have applied for inclusion in the list from their new place and those, who have not applied for inclusion, can apply as soon as possible.
