AGARTALA: A Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan has been arrested for Wednesday's "rape" of a minor girl at Nandarampara village in West Tripura district's Khowai subdivision.

National Conference of Tripura (NCT) leader Animesh Debbarma claimed that the 15-year-old victim is a supporter of his party. He alleged that the jawan forcibly took her into a jungle and raped her while she was returning home from her relatives' place. She later reported the matter to her parents.
When villagers learnt about the crime from the victim's family, they attacked and set ablaze TSR camps and a TV set at Nandarampara. TSR jawans fired in the air to chase away the villagers. Superintendent of police (West Tripura) Anees Parasad and other officials rushed to the spot.
Earlier on February 18, three jawans from the TSR's sixth battalion were arrested for the alleged rape and murder of Nilima Debbarma, an NCT candidate for Thursday's village committee election, at Aidankur village in Khowai subdivision.
The accused were identified as sepoy Anantahari Jamatia, lance-naik Narayan Ghosh and cook Dipak Debbarma. Police ordered an inquiry against TSR (sixth battalion) commander Arjun Debbarma for his alleged failure to keep his force in check.
