AIUDF to contest 34 seats sans Cong aid in Assam assembly polls

Guwahati: Aminul Islam, AIUDF MLA from the Dhing constituency, on Sunday said the party is confident of a satisfactory performance in the 34-35 seats they plan to contest in the 2026 assembly elections, without forming an alliance with Congress.

“BJP is trying to win the elections to be held in Mar-Apr next year by creating false narratives. Congress is getting caught up in these narratives. They must change their strategy for the polls,” Islam added.


About forging alliance with Congress, Islam said AIUDF has no plan to do so. “AIUDF has won the assembly elections in 34 constituencies without any alliance in the past. We have decided to contest in 30-35 constituencies where the party has had a hold in the past,” he added.

He said Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF said, “The need of the hour is to fight in unison in all constituencies to snatch seats from BJP. We expected Congress and its allies to defeat BJP in at least 50 seats.”

Islam added that CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is pushing Congress to 22 seats where BJP has a slimmer chance at victory. “Congress is now only fighting against AIUDF in these 22 seats instead of fighting BJP in the remaining 104 seats. The objective of the CM is to confine Congress to these 22 seats so that BJP can win the other 104 seats with ease,” he said.
