Guwahati: Veteran actor Ashish Vidyarthi and his wife Rupali Barua were injured in a road accident on Friday night in the Zoo Road area.
Traffic additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Shafiqul Hussain said the couple had gone to a private hotel near the Zoo Road Tiniali junction for dinner. After coming out, they were crossing the road when a speeding motorcycle, coming from the Dispur side and heading towards the Chandmari area, struck them.
“The couple were struck by a speeding two-wheeler that has been seized by the traffic officials of Geetanagar Police Station. Vidyarthi sustained injuries in his leg and Barua in her head. Both were taken to a private hospital where they are currently being treated,” the ADCP said.
Hussain said the rider also sustained serious injuries in the collision and was taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). “Following the accident, the person was bleeding from his mouth and his condition was critical. So, he had to be immediately rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). As a result, we could not conduct a breathalyser test at that time. However, after his treatment the test was conducted on Saturday, which confirmed that he was intoxicated at the time of the accident,” Hussain said.
Vidyarthi later addressed the incident on Instagram Live on Saturday. “Just to let you all know, Rupali and I are fine. She is under observation, and all is well. Whatever happened was minor, nothing to sensationalize. Police have also informed me that the bike rider has regained consciousness. Thank you for the wishes.”
