3 of family held for murdering woman, kidnapping infant

A 10-month-old girl, Gugahati, was abducted and later rescued in Jorhat, Assam on Tuesday. She and her mother, Nitumoni Lukhrakon, had been missing since Monday after going to the market. Nitumoni's body was found with strangulation marks on her neck on Tuesday, and Gugahati was rescued from Jorhat on the same day. Police suspect that one Hiramai Gogoi of Tengapukhuri in Charaideo district abducted the mother and daughter. They arrested Hiramai, her husband Basanta Gogoi, and son Prasanta Gogoi on Wednesday. During interrogation, the police found that Hiramai's son had already left Sivasagar by train with the child. The police sought the cooperation of Jorhat district police and came to know that Prasanta had gotten down from the train at Mariani and went to Jorhat town from where they rescued the child incidentally. The child was found with Prasanta's 14-year-old daughter. The police arrested Hiramai, her husband, and son and are investigating the case.

Guwahati: A 10-month-old girl of Sivasagar, who was abducted after allegedly murdering her mother on Monday, was rescued by police in Jorhat on Tuesday.
Police arrested three of a family on charges of kidnapping, human trafficking and murder on Wednesday. The police said they were planning to send the baby to Himachal Pradesh.
According to the police, the child and her mother — Nitumoni Lukhrakon — who were residents of Rajabari tea estate in Sivasagar district, were missing since Monday after they had gone to the market.

Nitumoni’s body with strangulation marks on her neck was recovered by the police from a drain at Tengapukhuri in neighbouring district of Charaideo on Tuesday. The child was rescued from Jorhat the same day.
Sivasagar SP Subrajyoti Borah said, “Nitumoni’s mother Bobita Lukhrakon filed a missing complaint with the police around 7.45 pm on Monday. The next day, Nitumoni’s sister Bhagyasri told police that they suspect that one Hiramai Gogoi of Tengapukhuri in Charaideo district has abducted them. Accordingly, we picked up Hiramai and her husband Basanta Gogoi from Simaluguri railway station and interrogated them.”
During interrogation, the police found that Hiramai’s son, Prasanta, had already left Sivasagar by train with the child. “We sought the cooperation of Jorhat district police. We came to know that Prasanta got down from the train at Mariani and went to Jorhat town, from where we rescued the child. Incidentally, the child was found with Prasanta’s 14-year-old daughter,” the SP added.
During interrogation, the police found that Hiramai’s family had planned to send the child to their daughter who is childless and lives in Himachal Pradesh. The police on Wednesday arrested Hiramai, her husband Basanta and her son Prasanta.
