Twisted ‘love’: Lawyer sends bomb threat to Gurgaon’s Horizon Centre to stop ex’s job interview
GURGAON: A 29-year-old law graduate sent a fake bomb threat email to a company operating from DLF Two Horizon Center on Golf Course Road. His twisted reason? He hoped the scare would trigger an evacuation and subsequently delay his former girlfriend's scheduled interview in the building. He believed she might then turn to him for some kind of help, giving him an opportunity to reconnect and possibly rekindle their relationship.
Police have arrested the accused, who is originally from Kolkata. He was handling legal matters for a private firm in the city.
Police said the accused sent the email using a newly created, forged email ID to the company's official email address on Monday morning.
During interrogation, police said, the accused revealed that the couple had broken up after dating for around a year and a half. Although they remained in touch for some time, the woman had begun distancing herself.
"He believed that if the interview did not take place, she might approach him for help and their relationship could be re-established," said assistant commissioner of police (ACP) (DLF) Vikas Kaushik. The woman has not filed a complaint.
The officer said the company received the email threatening to blow up a commercial complex in Sector 43 around 9.15am. Following the alert, teams from Sushant Lok police station rushed to the spot. The Haryana Disaster Response Force (HDRF), dog squad, fire brigade and bomb detection teams were also pressed into service, and the building was evacuated and sanitised as per protocol.
"After a thorough search of the premises, no suspicious object was found. A case was registered under relevant sections, and our cybercrime team began tracing the source of the email," Kaushik said.
Security officials of the building submitted a written complaint stating that the email had been sent to the company's corporate email ID to create an atmosphere of fear. Police said the accused attempted to mask his digital footprint. However, investigators tracked the IP details and other technical evidence linked to the email ID.
The accused was apprehended from Sector 31, Gurgaon, on Tuesday. The gadgets used in the crime, including a smartphone, were seized. Police said he has no previous criminal record. Officers added that they will speak to the woman as part of background verification and the ongoing investigation.
