GURUGRAM: A court in Panipat has sentenced a 34-year-old woman from Punjab to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment for trafficking drugs. The woman was caught by Panipat police with 670 grams of heroin in 2019.
Panipat’s additional sessions judge Nishant Sharma also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Parvinder Kaur on December 20 after holding her guilty of the “very serious offence” of drug trafficking “which needs to be dealt with an iron hand”.
“Drugs have become a new tool to destroy the new generation of the country. Drug menace has engulfed entire villages in various parts of the country. The drugs not only destroy individuals, but also their entire family. The addicts become a liability on their families as well as the state,” the court observed.
Calling for strict action against drug traffickers, the judge said, “Drug traffickers for some profits are willing to jeopardise the life of others, in this manner, they are no better than contract killers who take money to kill people. Even professional killers kill only an individual, but drug traffickers kill the entire family.”
The case dates back to April 2, 2019, when Parvinder, a resident of Jalandhar in Punjab, was arrested by police with the banned narcotics from GT Road in Panipat.
During the final arguments, public prosecutor Arvind Sharma said that the woman was held with possession of a commercial quantity of heroin and thus liable for maximum punishment.
On his part, AK Arora, the counsel for Parvinder, argued that his client is a single parent of a 13-year-old child and has aged parents to look after as her husband had left her. “This was her first offence and suffering from various ailments.”
However, the court said that the accused committed the offence having complete knowledge of its consequences. “The offence committed by the convict does not deserve any leniency from the court,” the judge said, while pronouncing the judgment.
