had to brace for outages. Several areas in the city suffered power cut for more than six hours in the last three days.

Power cut adds to the problems several professionals are facing as working from home is the new normal. Till Wednesday, Gurugram received 100 mm of rainfall

However, according to officials at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the city is likely to receive more rains in the coming days.

“Thunderstorm with heavy rain would occur over most places of Delhi, Hissar, Hansi, Bhiwani, Jind, Kaithal, Sonipat, Mahendergarh, Farrukhnagar, Gurugram, Panipat, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Karnal and Kurukshetra in the coming days,” an IMD official said.

Residents are worried as they are not being able to recharge their power backups owing to outages that last for more then 6 hours to 7 hours on an average.

“The situation is really bad in Gurugram. Even areas which are stuck with cyclones do not suffer outage for this long,” said Mona Singh, a resident of

Sushant Lok-1

Another resident, Gaurav Soni, said, “I had to move to a friend’s place in Delhi as there was no power supply at my place. Yesterday (Tuesday), too there was no power at my place for most part of the day. How can people work from home without electricity and the internet? After a certain time, the power backup also dries out. It’s like we are living in ‘Stone Age’.”

Avinash Mishra, a resident of

Palam Vihar

, said,

“My parents are old and they cannot move out because of

Covid-19

situation. We are without electricity throughout the day and also facing waterlogging in our area. It is a difficult situation. Every year, heavy rain washes away all the tall claims of the government that we have better infrastructure.”

Meanwhile, officials from the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) said because of heavy rains in the past three days in the city, many lines are disrupted and some of the transformers have also stopped working leading to many areas facing power cuts. “We have been able to restore power supply in many areas on Wednesday. There are some issues because of heavy rains. We are trying to fix the problems of faulty transformers and power lines,” a senior DHBVN official said.
