Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar to launch Mahavir Chowk underpass, Basai Chowk flyover today
GURUGRAM: The Mahavir Chowk underpass and the Basai Chowk flyover are set to be opened to the public on Saturday. According to GMDA officials, both facilities will be inaugurated by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
While the 318-metre-long underpass at Mahavir Chowk has been under construction for almost three years, the 820m flyover at Basai has been in the making even longer — since 2018.
“GMDA has undertaken various projects to improve road infrastructure in Gurgaon and make commuting smoother on the city roads. The inauguration of these two highly-awaited projects will further enhance mobility at these important intersections and offer better connectivity to various prime areas in the city and beyond,” said Sudhir Rajpal, the GMDA chief executive officer.
The CM conducted an inspection of the Mahavir Chowk underpass on Friday evening. The underpass is expected to improve connectivity between Old Delhi-Gurugram road and the bus stand road and ease traffic movement at Mahavir Chowk, which sees a high volume of traffic moving towards Civil Hospital and Sadar Bazar.
The Basai flyover, meanwhile, will connect Umang Bhardwaj Chowk to sectors 9 and 9A, and is expected to massively help in reducing congestion at Basai Chowk, which sees an average of 10,254 vehicles every day. Apart from benefiting the residents of the areas it connects, the flyover will also ease the commute for those residing in areas along the Dwarka Expressway as well as people traveling towards Delhi, Jhajjar and Rohtak.
Although the opening of both the flyover and the underpass has been long awaited, the projects of which the two facilities are a part aren’t yet complete.
The Rs 25.9 crore project to revamp Mahavir Chowk, apart from the underpass, includes the construction of a 221m elevated walkway, on which work has only just started.
According to officials from the public works department (PWD), it will take another “four to five months” for the facility to be completed.
The project also includes the construction of 2.1km of surface roads, on which work is still underway.
Similarly, the Basai flyover is part of a Rs 114 crore project to ease traffic movement between Umang Bhardwaj Chowk and Dwarka Expressway. Apart from the flyover, it involves widening the road to six lanes, constructing a railway overbridge near Basai village as well as two foot overbridges. Apart from the flyover, work on all the other components is still underway.
The Mahavir Chowk project had an initial deadline of 18 months, while the project to revamp the Umang Bhardwaj Chowk-Dwarka Expressway stretch was supposed to be completed by 2020.
