Gurugram: Sewer leak damages e-way service lane, NHAI says repair work soon

GURUGRAM: Commuters residing in the newly-developed sectors of the city have to use the pothole-ridden service road near Narsinghpur village on their way to the other parts of Gurugram . While one side of the service road along the carriageway for vehicles moving from Delhi towards Jaipur is in a decent condition, the other along the carriageway for vehicles moving from Jaipur towards Delhi has broken down at spots.

An official from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said the road sees repairs but deteriorates again because it often gets flooded with sewage released from homes in the nearby villages. “The highway concessionaire undertook road strengthening along this stretch recently, but sewage water is frequently discharged from the nearby homes, leading to water accumulation on this road. So, the road quality deteriorates,” said the official.

Commuters said the issue has persisted for several years, adding that the interventions by the road authority are insufficient. “How can any authority justify potholes on a national highway for nearly an entire year? Heavy vehicles and residents use this portion of the expressway a lot. Officials need to find a long-term solution to the problem of potholes,” said Nishant Upadhyay, a resident of Sector 84.

Amit Yadav, a resident of Sec 103, said, “Our vehicles are paying the price of the negligence by authorities. Potholes adversely impact vehicle machinery, especially during monsoon when rain causes waterlogging, and we cannot see them.”

Plugging the potholes or only repairing the road, Yadav added, is not a long-term solution. “The authorities concerned need to put their heads together to figure out the root cause of the problem and work out a long-term solution,” he added. According to the NHAI, repair work will take place soon. “We will also ask the MCG and GMDA to look into the drainage issue in this area,” said the official.
