20 docs play crusaders, pledge their organs

GURGAON: Over 20 doctors from the city pledged their organs on the occasion of Organ Donation Day 2016.

“India suffers from a huge burden of organ failure and an acute organ shortage crisis, which has deprived thousands of patients from getting a new life. Since kidneys are the most commonly carried-out transplant, and I have personally seen many people wait for a match, I feel connected to the cause. Organ donation doesn’t occur to most people until their own near and dear ones are in need,” said Dr P N Gupta, chief of nephrology, Paras Hospital, who pledged to donate his organs on Saturday. “This initiative is all about creating awareness about organ donation,” he added.

“I pledged to donate my organs in case of brain death. I took the oath to spread awareness about organ donation so as to save lives. We all should pledge to donate organs after death. I don't want my organs to go to waste," said Dr RP Singh, director & HoD, Centre for Liver Transplant & Gastro Sciences, Saroj Super Speciality Hospital.

Some doctors emphasised on conducting campaigns and programmes to educate people about the need of organ donation.

“Our country needs a million kidneys and livers, while the availability is only around 3500. In most cases, only transplantation can save the lives of the patients. I had pledged my organs long back, but today we conducted a street play to make children understand the importance of organ donation,” said Dr. Sindhu Srivastava, a city-based urologist.

“I can save 50 lives after I die. Imagine how many lives will be saved if you all donate your organs. Join hands and save the millions dying of organ requirement and be alive in someone,” said Dr P K Bharadwaj, another doctor.
