World ocean conclave ’26 to be held from Feb 23–26

Panaji: Vijnana Bharati, the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), and Goa University have organised the World Ocean Science Congress (WOSC) 2026 from Feb 23–26, 2026. This biennial international conclave provides a common platform for maritime countries and stakeholders to discuss urgent priorities and common problems within the ocean sector.

As a prelude to the event, a series of outreach programmes were conducted to raise awareness among students about the ocean’s importance as an energy source and its role in climate change. In this connection, the PG departments of microbiology, geography, and chemistry of the Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Khandola, organised state-level competitions for PG students from all disciplines.


The event took place on Jan 24 at the college campus in Khandola, Marcela. PG students across colleges from various disciplines participated in four categories highlighting marine issues.

In Marine Moments (reel contest), students created 60-second reels focusing on marine biodiversity, coastal landscapes, and pollution. Students developed eco-friendly models representing innovations for marine sustainability and the ocean as a climate regulator in the Ecoscapes of the Sea contest. The street play competition, Ocean Echoes, highlighted marine environmental issues. The SeaZest (fermented seafood contest) showcased the preparation of traditional fermented fish and shellfish pickles and sauces.

The inaugural ceremony was marked by a solemn pledge taken by all attendees, reaffirming their commitment to protect and preserve the oceans for future generations.

Besides the competitions, an awareness session on ocean conservation was delivered by Jeremy Josh, a marine biologist from Coastal Impact Foundation, Goa.

Principal Purnakala Samant and vice principal Dilecta D'Costa lead the event as coordinators.
